When Tiki Bars and Rums Brands Collide… Mahiki Coconut Rum Liqueur has been around for a long time and has been previously presented in several different ways. Previous versions have been ‘OK’ – nothing out of the ordinary, and far from horrible – just ‘OK’. So why should we be interested in this new release that has been put together by Georgi ‘Rum Man’ Radev, the famous Bar Manager of the iconic London Tiki Bar: Mahiki?
Well… this one tastes pretty damn good.
It is a liqueur produced from a blend of Jamaican and Polynesian rums that have been flavoured with Western Samoan coconuts. When you first open the bottle, the smell of coconuts fills your world – not the fake, suntan lotion type of smell either. Taking a sip, you’ll quickly discover that it has a rum base that really makes itself felt. I am sure it is the Jamaican content that makes all the difference, but of course the Fijian rum adds complexity, interest and of course a touch more ‘aloha’ spirit.
I wish it was presented at higher alcoholic strength. 21% means it is going to be a more cost-effective retail proposition, but I’m sure a bottle strength of 40% would kick ass, but I am sure it has been released this way to directly compete with the market leader (i.e. Malibu).
This release marks the first phase of more involvement in the retail scene for Mahiki. Later this year we can expect to see a series of Ready to Drink Cocktails that will be instantly recognizable to the nightclubs regular visitors. The team behind Mahiki Coconut Rum liqueur will be hoping that this release captures all the style and vibrant fun of the dynamic Mahiki brand. Mahiki is a renowned destination for fresh fruit & rum cocktails, with a menu featuring over 100 rums from all over the world. Rum and tiki fans should keep an eye open for the UK launch as a series of Spring & Summer roadshows are confirmed. You can expect tiki-designed drinking vessels and back bar displays to entice fun-loving cocktail drinkers. Consumers will enjoy classic cocktails such as Pina Colada, Daiquiri, and flamboyant sharing serves such as the legendary Mahiki Treasure Chest.
The clear glass 70cl Mahiki Coconut Rum liqueur bottle has been designed by the exuberant British street fashion designer Henry Holland. It features bright, colourful Polynesian tiki motifs, Hawaiian botanicals and flora.
Mahiki Coconut Rum Liqueur has a RRP of £16. Available in the UK.
