How has the rum market changed over the last 10 years?
It’s fascinating to take a step back and see how rum has evolved. A few years ago, you could hear people saying “the rum market is exploding, it’s booming”. It’s true that even today we can see that the market for this spirit continues to grow.
Over the last 10 years, more rum producers have entered the market, and as a result, many new references have appeared. At the same time, some distilleries that were on the verge of disappearing have relaunched their production, and we can now find some truly rare rum from almost every corner of the planet.
There’s still a lot to discover! Distilleries and cellar masters have also become more sophisticated in their distillation and aging of rum. This is giving rise to juices and cuvées that would have been hard to find just a few years ago. There are clearly many new nuggets on the way.
How will it evolve over the next 10 years?
I wish I had a crystal ball and could give you the answer, but I can only give you my guesses. I think the rum market will continue to evolve, but without the exponential growth seen over the last 10 years. In my opinion, new players will continue to appear on the rum market, and I hope that they will bring new knowledge and know-how to the table.
There are many who are experimenting with their distillation techniques, and this often results in magnificent tastings. One thing that the evolution of the market has brought with it is the appearance of more and more speculators. Many enthusiasts see rum as a new safe haven and invest in vintages that may one day have a good resale value. This is not really our philosophy at Excellence Rhum, but we understand that it goes hand in hand with a healthy market.
Do you have any news you’d like to share with us?
The big news this year is that we’re 10 years old! An anniversary that deserves to be celebrated. In fact, we’re celebrating every month with the release of our anniversary cuvées. We’ve been working on this for many months, and it’s a real pleasure to see all that work come to fruition in vintages such as our COLLECTION 100% Guadeloupe, Caroni Nobilis, the Cuvée Éminente and the 10 th anniversary Saint James brut de fût. A year of celebrations and releases in itself!
