With ‘Beautiful Mistake’, Coloma praises creative mistakes

Beautiful Mistake is a 13-year-old single cask aged in the three original casks that gave rise to Coloma’s unique ageing technique. This limited edition commemorates the day when, by mistake, the two “maestras roneras” at Hacienda Coloma poured rum into casks that had previously contained coffee liqueur.

Coloma Beautiful Mistake

This ‘Beautiful Mistake’ created an unexpected taste sensation for these maestros who had just created and discovered, by mistake, what would become Coloma’s DNA. The Colombian distillery ‘Hacienda Coloma’ never ceases to amaze us, redefining the boundaries of its rum every year, while maintaining, as a guiding principle, the ageing of each rum in ex-coffee liqueur casks.

Last year, after eight years of ageing in ex-Bourbon casks and a finish in ex-Rozelieures French peated single malt casks, a unique product appeared: Coloma Rozelieures Cask Finish.

Added to this is Alegria (meaning joy in English), a rum aged for six years in organic Mokka coffee liqueur casks. ‘This brings a little more richness and sweetness than our classic 8-year-old. All for £37. It’s a good introduction to understanding the range,’ explains Alberto Constain, who runs the brand. ‘And it’s selling very well in wine shops at the moment!’

Surprises for 2025

For 2025, Coloma is releasing a 13-year-old single cask (limited edition) in tribute to that wonderful mistake made 13 years ago. These three casks marked the beginning of the ageing tradition at the Coloma hacienda: ageing each rum in old casks that had previously contained coffee liqueur. “As a reminder, it was initially a filling error… which led to a new way of producing rum here, as it proved so beneficial,‘ says Alberto. ’Well, these three casks were filled with rum 13 years ago and we are releasing them this year. Mistakes can sometimes lead to discoveries!”
