Focus Terroir – Mexico, the new frontier for rum?

Mexico is a very large country, larger than many people imagine, with enormous biodiversity and immense contrasts in all areas, especially in terms of climate and soil, which is what we are really interested in in this article.

When we talk about Mexico, everyone thinks of tequila and, to a lesser extent, mezcal, both of which are made from agave… but that’s not all. In fact, most blended tequilas are chaptalised with 49% white cane sugar, and Mexico produces a large quantity of this type of alcohol.

It is the sixth largest sugar cane producer in the world. However, Mexico features little or not at all on the world rum map… This has not always been the case, as 30 years ago, any self-respecting wedding would offer quality rum for guests to drink.

Today, the same cannot be said, and tequila has practically monopolised weddings in Mexico. In the meantime, rum experienced a huge slump… before beginning to make a comeback in recent years.
