Haitian distillery Barbancourt is making a name for itself with the launch of its new cuvée “Volcanic Cane”, a revisited edition of its Réserve du Domaine 15 ans, originally conceived for the Barbancourt family and marketed in the early 1970s.
This international award-winning rum is the result of double distillation in copper columns, followed by nearly fifteen years’ maturation in ex-Cognac casks. For this special edition, the rum completes its six-month journey in Islay peated whisky casks, under the careful supervision of Barbancourt’s cellar master, before being bottled brut de fût.
Delphine Gardère, CEO of Maison Barbancourt, describes this new cuvée as a natural evolution for the distillery: “The launch of our first finish marks a new era for Barbancourt, combining our ancestral know-how with our constant quest for innovation. I’m particularly proud of our teams and can’t wait to unveil this limited edition to the world. Others will follow shortly.”
Volcanic cane pays tribute to the terroirs of Haiti and Islay, highlighting the unique characteristics of these volcanic soils. This limited edition offers connoisseurs the opportunity to explore a new facet of Rhum Barbancourt, enriched by the influences of Islay peated whisky. Produced in a limited edition of just 4,850, the Volcanic Cane cuvée is aimed at connoisseurs and collectors alike. This limited edition is one of the cuvées commemorating the 160th anniversary of the Barbancourt distillery.
Tasting notes by Alexandre Vingtier:
Color: amber.
Nose: A rich opening with notes of dark chocolate and cocoa nibs, followed by peat smoke with almost tarry accents. This complexity is softened by a touch of vanilla, reminiscent of tiger balm with its nuances of camphor, mint, eucalyptus and clove. The nose then evolves towards aromas of dried fruit, such as grapes and figs, accompanied by subtle hints of citrus.
Mouth: The smoke becomes more subtle and perfectly integrated, supporting aromas of cooked pear, pineapple and dried banana. The spices reveal themselves with a hint of nutmeg, while the orange marmalade brings a gentle bitterness. The whole is wrapped in notes of undergrowth, adding an earthy, complex dimension.
Finish: Exceptionally long, intense and persistent, marked by flavors of walnut, cinnamon, oak, pepper and wood fire. Hints of vanilla, caramel and beeswax coat the finish for a rich, comforting conclusion.
Empty glass: A final echo of peat, accompanied by nuances of moss, vanilla and oak, lingers delicately, inviting you to revisit this unique aromatic profile.
