It is the perfect occasion to take stock of this Mauritian rum with Mickaël Derunes, General Manager of Distillerie de Labourdonnais.

By Rumporter

What is the history of the Distillery?

Distillerie de Labourdonnais was launched in 2006, at the heart of the Domaine de Labourdonnais, in the north of Mauritius, where sugar cane has been cultivated for more than two centuries. Drawing on its agricultural roots, the brand has gradually established itself as a benchmark for premium Mauritian rum, thanks to rums made from pure sugar cane juice. From the outset, the distillery chose an artisanal approach faithful to the pure cane juice rum tradition. Our rums thus reflect expertise built on rigorous production methods, careful ageing and natural infusions inspired by the fruits and spices of the estate.

What makes it distinctive in the Mauritian rum landscape?

The singularity of Distillerie de Labourdonnais rests above all on its agricultural anchorage and its artisanal approach. Beyond production, we seek to create genuine aromatic experiences. Our collections explore different worlds — classic, infused or prestige — through precise work on blending, ageing and natural infusions. This identity is also expressed through our personalisation and private-labelling service, developed for companies, events or exclusive concepts wishing to create a cuvée in their own image.

How is Labourdonnais rum produced?

Everything begins with the sugar cane harvest. The fresh juice is fermented for around 35 hours using yeasts selected for pure cane juice rum. This step develops the aromatic compounds that will shape the character of the rum. The white rum is then gradually reduced before being either infused with natural fruits and spices, or sent for ageing.

The rums are mainly aged in ex-Cognac, ex-Bourbon, ex-Port and ex-Whisky casks. The Mauritian tropical climate plays an essential role in this maturation phase, fostering the development of richer, more complex and more elegant aromatic profiles over time. We also have a few exceptional casks, reserved for certain more exclusive limited editions.

Regarding the change of visual identity, why did you take this decision?

After nearly ten years, it was essential to evolve our image while remaining true to our DNA. This visual overhaul met several objectives: harmonising the different ranges, strengthening consistency on the shelf and better reflecting the world of each recipe. We wanted each bottle to tell more of its story. The new labels thus draw on the heritage of the Domaine de Labourdonnais. Beyond aesthetics, this evolution above all supports a broader ambition: strengthening our international visibility while asserting our Mauritian identity.

What changes concretely?

All the bottles and packaging have been reworked to bring greater consistency and modernity to the brand. The different collections are now better identified: the Classic range, the Liqueur range, the Artisanal range, the Prestige range, as well as the Limited Editions.

This revamping remains above all a visual evolution: the recipes themselves are unchanged. Pure cane juice, blends, ageing and artisanal production continue to reflect the distillery’s historic expertise. In the same spirit, the distillery’s website has also been entirely redesigned to offer a more immersive and fluid experience. Conceived as a true showcase for the brand, it allows enthusiasts as well as professionals and international partners to discover the distillery’s world.

What are the next steps for DDL?

The distillery is now pursuing its development around several major axes: internationalisation, the development of aged rums, the creation of new references and the personalisation of labels as well as recipes. Demand for more complex and premium rums continues to grow, both in Mauritius and for export. Cask ageing thus opens up new creative perspectives, making it possible to explore deeper and more refined aromatic profiles. The distillery also intends to continue developing new creations while remaining faithful to its identity. In parallel, we keep championing Mauritian rum on the local market. Internationally, we also maintain our presence through trade shows, partnerships and activations around Mauritian craftsmanship. Our ambition remains unchanged: to showcase Mauritian rum through authentic creations, rooted in their terroir and open to the world.

The highly regarded Distillerie de Labourdonnais is rolling out a new visual identity, with new labels and a new website.
